Meet Dr. Tom Ison

Dr. Thomas Ison is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American College of Dentists.

Dr. Ison grew up in Flemingsburg, Kentucky, a town approximately the same size as Newburgh. He graduated from Fleming County High School where he played basketball and golf, and also participated in theater. He attended Morehead State University for his undergraduate program, and moved on to the University of Kentucky for dental school where he obtained a Doctor of Dental Medicine Degree. He returned to his hometown to practice general dentistry for a while before returning to UK for his pediatrics residency. He completed his specialty training in pediatric dentistry at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center. Dr. Ison then completed a United Cerebral Palsy Fellowship in pediatric dentistry at James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children and Indiana University School of Dentistry in Indianapolis.

After completing his fellowship, Dr. Ison moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where he served as the Chief of Dentistry at Kosair Children’s Hospital (now Norton Children’s Hospital.) While there he provided dental care for children in the hospital as well as running a full time dental clinic. After leaving the hospital program, Dr. Ison provided primary dental care in a pediatric  private practice in Louisville for over 15 years. With his extensive background in hospital care, Dr. Ison is an expert on care for the medically fragile child, and is comfortable working with these special patients.

Dr. Ison has held faculty appointments at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry, University of Louisville School of Dentistry, and Indiana University School of Dentistry. He has lectured on early childhood caries, dental trauma, dental care for the pediatric cancer patient, and pediatric sedation.

In addition to his clinical background, Dr. Ison has held leadership roles in numerous dental professional organizations at the local, state, regional, and national levels. He has been President of both the Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry and the Kentucky Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, as well as trustee for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He holds membership in the American Dental Association, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry, Kentucky Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Kentucky Dental Association, and Louisville Dental Society. Dr. Ison has been asked to serve as  the Parliamentarian of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry for the 2021-22 term. This is considered quite an honor, as it is by personal request of the president of the academy and must be approved by the board of directors.

Dr. Ison is married to Connie, a Hoosier native. They have one daughter who will be headed off to college in the fall of 2020. Dr. Ison is active in his church community. He loves to watch sports of any kind, and enjoys playing golf and traveling with his family. He’s a bit of an expert on visiting Disney World, just ask him about it!  Dr. Ison is very excited to be joining the community of Newburgh.

First Pediatric Dental Visit

Dr. Ison and his team are dedicated to great dental experiences.

We, along with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, recommend you bring your child in by his or her first birthday.

During your first visit, you will be introduced to our Pediatric Dental Team, given an office tour and discuss your child’s unique smile and ways to keep it beautiful for years to come.

Depending on the age of your child, he or she will either be given a knee-to-knee examination (where your baby’s head will rest on our doctor’s knee while their body is on your lap) or a regular exam in the doctor’s chair.

We request that you complete our First Visit Forms prior to arriving for your appointment. This helps our office keep your and everyone else’s scheduled visit on time.

Your initial exam will last approximately 30 minutes. Oral hygiene instructions will also be given with suggestions to help your child care for his or her own teeth. In most cases, we will also clean their teeth on this visit, and provide an evaluation that will outline any existing dental problems and proposed treatment.

Please print and fill out our New Patient Forms.

Bring them with you at first appointment.

Thank You.

Pediatric Dentistry

What is a Pediatric Dentist?

Pediatric Dentists, like Drs. Ison, are specialists dedicated to the oral health of children and the monitoring of their facial growth and development. Our office is designed for treating children from infancy through adolescence, as well as the medically and the physically compromised.

Why Choose a Pediatric Dentist?

A pediatric patient not only has a different dentition
than adults but he/she may have specific dental and behavioral needs that are unique to a child. These
needs may include orthodontics, dental sealants, fluoride applications or home treatments, or just simply education in oral hygiene. In addition to treating existing dental problems, our office focuses on prevention through patient and parent education. We like to feel that you and your child do not come to our office to have their “cavities fixed” but rather to prevent them. Our office provides all of the educational tools necessary for our patients to enjoy a cavity-free future.

What is a Board Certified

 Pediatric Dentist?

When a Pediatric Dentist is Board Certified it means that the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry or ABPD certifies that the dental care being provided is based on standards of excellence that lead to high quality oral health care for infants, children, adolescents and patients with special health care needs. Certification by the ABPD provides assurance to the public that  Pediatric Dentists like Drs. Ison have successfully completed accredited training and a voluntary examination process designed to continually validate the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to the delivery of quality patient care.

Establishing Your Child’s

Dental Home

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry encourages parents and other care providers to help every child establish a dental home by 12 months of age. Establishing a dental home provides some key components to dental care for your child including...

Comprehensive oral health care including acute care and preventive services.

Individualized preventive dental health program based upon a caries-risk assessment.

Anticipatory guidance regarding growth and development.

Plan for acute dental trauma (emergencies).

Dietary counseling.

Referrals to dental specialists when care cannot directly be provided within the dental home.

Referral at an age determined by patient, parent, and pediatric dentist.
